Calling Horse Archers in the UKI’m looking for 3 or 4 people who can shoot on the move (without a horse), with reasonably rapid burst shooting technique. This would be for filming sometime first half of July, on a weekday, in the Kettering area.It is for an experimental demo as part of a film about the Bayeux Tapestry. The Tapestry shows all the Norman archers shooting on the move. We also know that the Normans used combined forces – cavalry , infantry and archers. The idea is to have these infantry archers shoot on the move as they pass a line of shield targets and for the horsemen to sweep in close behind them to throw their javelins. We want to try to work out a good system of infantry archers and cavalry working effectively together. I have some ideas about this.We are simply exploring a tactic and so you do not need to be in period dress or have a period correct bow. Similarly, it matters not a jot whether you are male or female. Skill and enthusiasm are all that is required - ana nice smiley dosposition would also be a bonus. Obviously, the reason I’m asking the horse archer community is because they have the skills for rapid shooting on the move and often practice shooting whilst walking. Also they are comfortable around horses. However, if you also tick both those boxes, yet are not a horse archer, you would be equally welcome. I’m afraid it would have to be a volunteer job, though I’m sure we could pay travel expenses etc.Message me with an e-mail address if interested. ... See MoreSee Less
Armour is the main theme of my latest article on SUBSTACK Read for free here: loadesofhistory.substack.com/p/spitfires-jaguars-and-knightly-armourIt weaves some childhood memory with reflections on the connection between plate armour and other functional sculptural forms in metal, such as planes and cars. I hope that it resonates with some of you armour buffs out there. I think it will. Also don't forget to check out my other articles on Substack - last weeks one about how Tudor archery butts were made should be of interest to all you longbow folk. ...
